Mara's work covers a range of journalistic specialisms including news and current affairs, travel, entertainment, business and lifestyle features.

Furthermore, as an academic researcher, she has presented papers at the Birmingham-Zaragoza Research Colloquium - a joint initiative between the University of Birmingham (UK) and the University of Zaragoza (Spain) on themes such as 'Borders in Contemporary Cinema' and 'Spaces of Childhood and Youth in Film'. Her papers on Black / Caribbean filmic representations explore the subjects of 'Mobility and Racial Segregation in America's Deep South' as well as 'Representations on Self-Identity' by Caribbean-American filmmakers who engage in identity negotiation to address issues of pervasive stereotypes and misrepresentations of the Caribbean in film and television.
